Volunteers’ week 2020

02/06/2020

Volunteers’ Week is taking place this week, 1-7th June 2020. It is an annual celebration of the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering.

This year will be different, due to social distancing we are unable to get together at celebration events for volunteers in Islington. Instead, organisations will be looking at how they can thank their amazing volunteers virtually, through social media and online campaigns for example.

Although many organisations have had to cut back or stop activity, the coronavirus crisis has demonstrated more than ever the incredible contribution that volunteers make to communities. Hundreds of volunteers, both experienced and new, have been dedicating their time to help communities cope with the many consequences of coronavirus.

To celebrate Volunteers Week 2020, we would like to thank and highlight the great work volunteers have been doing in Islington. Thank you to all the volunteers who been helping out in the borough and specially during this difficult time. Please see here some of the amazing stories from volunteers making a difference in Islington.

The Volunteers’ Week website has lots of information for you to consider how best to mark this week as well as resources should you chose to celebrate.

As every year we also encourage organisations to use ValueYou – the volunteer recognition scheme that rewards volunteers for their hard work by providing them with a discount card. Now they added some great online discounts for volunteers. So if you’ve got volunteers who’ve done 100 hours of volunteering in the last 12 months, tell them to apply now. You can either let your volunteers know about the scheme and how to sign up, or get in touch with coordinator@valueyou.org if you’ve got some volunteers you’d like to nominate and would like to surprise them with a card during volunteers week!

In Islington, hundreds of people have expressed interest in volunteering their time to help others during the coronavirus pandemic. If you would like to register a volunteer role and be matched with volunteers please contact Marta Aparicio or Katie Roxburgh
