Islington celebrates its volunteers of the year 2015

This year’s Volunteer of the Year is Gareth who is a member of a team of volunteers at the Single Homeless Project, supporting some of the most vulnerable local people. He has turned his own life around in the last 10 years and puts this experience to use to support others by demonstrating that making positive lasting change is do-able. He is a dependable and creative volunteer. He has set up a nutrition on a budget cooking session and he is also a magician, teaching performance magic to young people

Mike Sherriff, Chief Executive of Voluntary Action Islington said:

“There is a huge amount of volunteer effort in Islington. All too often it goes unrecognised. We are delighted to celebrate volunteering locally and welcome the support of the Mayor, the Young Mayor and Doubletree by Hilton, Islington for these awards. ”

The Volunteer of the Year Awards were presented by the Mayor and the young Mayor at the Voluntary Action Islington AGM tonight. Other winners include a Youth Ambassador for mental health awareness, the organiser of a drama group for children at a local community centre, the founder of a project recycling toys for children and the mentor of a local 6th form student.
