Post: Volunteer Centre Support Officer
Salary: Scale 6, Pt 21, £30,380 (FTE)
Responsible to: Volunteer Centre Services Manager
Duration: 1 year (subject to an initial 6-months probationary period)
Hours: 31.75 hours per week/4.5 days
Benefits: 28 days Annual Leave (FTE) and 6% pension contribution
Location: Voluntary Action Islington, 200a Pentonville Road, London N1 9JP

Main purpose of the post:

  • Deliver volunteering brokerage services to clients from a range of backgrounds.
  • Lead on the Peabody Community Fund Volunteer Outreach project.
  • Provide good practice volunteering support to cross sector organisations.
  • Assist with the day to day running of the Volunteer Centre including volunteer management and the continuous development of the service.
  • Promote volunteering and assist with marketing of the Volunteer Centre service.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • To be the first point of contact for people using the Volunteer Centre services, responding to enquiries by telephone, email, letter and in person.
  • To ensure that enquiries are dealt with effectively; providing quality information, advice, and guidance personally; as well as referring onto appropriate third parties when needed.
  • To provide targeted outreach work in Islington by promoting local volunteering and community participation opportunities to improve their wellbeing, employability skills and reduce any social isolation.
  • To identify volunteering and community participation opportunities to ensure Peabody residents have access to current/new opportunities within voluntary, community, corporate and public sector organisations.
  • To provide good practice volunteering support to cross sector organisations – embedding consistent policies, procedures and practices including fair and effective safeguarding and recruitment procedures within their organisations.
  • To match potential volunteers to suitable opportunities which meet their needs, interests, and aspirations, in line with organisations’ role descriptions and person specifications.
  • Promote local volunteering opportunities to Islington residents and relevant information for local volunteer involving organisations by providing a range of good quality information – including newsletters, website content, printed materials and via social media.
  • Take part in volunteering fairs, other outreach events and recognition events for volunteers led by the Volunteer Services Manager.
  • To assist with recruitment, training, and supervision of a small team of volunteers to help with brokerage, drop-ins and outreach for the Volunteer Centre and other Voluntary Action Islington projects is involved in.
  • To liaise with local voluntary, community, faith, social enterprise, and public sector organisations, keep up to date on their requirements for volunteers and recruitment processes and increase the number of volunteering opportunities available through them.
  • To engage groups and organisations working with communities facing inequality, poverty, and social isolation.
  • To approve and maintain volunteering opportunities on Simply Connect platform – ensuring that content is clear, concise, engaging, accurate and up to date.
  • To provide reports on outputs and outcomes as and when required by VAI management.
  • To assist with the Centre’s achievement of relevant quality marks and standards.General duties:
  • At all times carrying out responsibilities/duties within the framework of Voluntary Action Islington’s (VAI) policies and procedures.
  • To treat with confidentiality any personal, private, or sensitive information about individual organisations, VAI service users, staff, and others.
  • To contribute to the overall VAI Communications and Marketing Strategy as well as ensuring that VAI services are promoted across all media.
  • To contribute to VAI’s role as Islington’s Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) by developing and maintaining a general awareness of Islington’s Voluntary, Community, Faith, and Social Enterprise (VCFSE) sector and its general requirements.
  • To use and assist others in the use of, information technology systems, to carry out duties in the most efficient and effective manner.
  • To assist with cover and reception and other VAI Resource Centre arrangements at 200a Pentonville Road, dealing with enquiries, signposting service users, and other requirements which may arise, to ensure high standards of customer service.
  • To assist in fundraising and income generation activities to meet VAI strategic aims.
  • To undertake training and constructively take part in meetings, i.e., taking minutes and chairing when necessary; supervision; appraisal; seminars; and other events designed to improve communication and assist with the effective development of the post and post holder.
  • To carry out additional tasks that may be required from time to time to achieve agreed service outputs and outcomes, and personal appraisal targets, as agreed with the line manager.
  • The post holder is expected to be committed to VAI’s core values of fairness, effectiveness, and transparency and to demonstrate this commitment in the way they carry out their duties.
