Free training – Universal Credit


The Covid-19 pandemic has meant an explosion in Universal Credit claims. Many of the people you are helping may be claiming for the first time and struggling to navigate their way through the system.

Islington Law Centre are here to help, so the Islington Law Centre offers one hour’s free training on Universal Credit to local organisations.

The training will provide a basic overview of Universal Credit, the common problems and issues faced by claimants and how you can access further legal advice to support service users who have questions about their Universal Credit.

The training is funded by City Bridge and will be taking place over Microsoft Teams. You do not need to have Microsoft Teams to access the training.

There are four dates available – Thursday 25 March at 11.00am; Monday 29 March at 3.00pm; Wednesday 31 March at 11.00am and Thursday 22 April at 3pm.

Course Objectives

  • To provide an overview of the basic rules of Universal Credit
  • To explain how to make applications and the help available
  • To understand how to manage your online journal
  • To identify and record a change of circumstance
  • To provide guidance on how to challenge a decision or a sanction

Course Outcomes

After completing the course, you will be able to:

  • Understand how universal credit is claimed
  • Understand how claimants manage their claims, the main universal credit rules including challenging decisions and issues with conditionality and sanctions
  • Identify when your client needs to seek further legal advice and how.
