Reimagining the future of public leisure services

January 21 @ 10:30 - 12:45

COVID-19 is having a devastating impact on council and leisure provider finances. Councils are facing tough decisions about how they provide their communities with access to sport and physical activity. Budgets are likely to reduce yet increasing participation levels particularly amongst deprived and disadvantaged communities has never been more important. If COVID-19 told us anything, it is that these communities have been most affected and are more likely to suffer greater health inequalities. Addressing this imbalance will no doubt be a key priority over the next few years.

However, with these challenges, comes great opportunities. Many councils are looking to fundamentally change how these services are delivered. This includes working with key commissioners and place-makers such as public health, planning and highways to identify needs and embed physical activity across all aspects of the council’s corporate agenda. Alongside rationalising and replacing old facilities, bringing services back under council control, transferring the management to trusts or private operators and placing assets into the hands of committed community volunteers. This webinar will share examples of what councils are doing, their ideas, journey and their vision for how they are reimagining public leisure provision to ensure sport and physical activity makes a real and lasting contribution to the health and wellbeing of communities.

This is a virtual Zoom meeting.
