Premises Masterclass: 1

26/01/2011 @ 09:45 - 15:00

Masterclass 1 – Leases and legal matters from the tenant’s point of view

These are high-level masterclasses aimed at people with a good general knowledge and understanding about leases, licences and legal saspects of running premises, who would benefit from the opportunity to explore premises issues in depth with highly experienced property professionals.  The classes will also be useful for people with experience of running or managing a community building in Islington, and especially for those experiencing problems with their lease or with other legal issues.  It is hoped that people will be prepared to share their experiences and problems in the confidential setting of these masterclasses.

Who is it for?
This course is suitable for premises managers, management committee members and anyone with responsibility for running community buildings. Please also see details of second masterclass in February.

What is it about?
The first section of the masterclass provides an exploration of premises law, focusing on ‘how to do it right.’ The second section is a problemsolving session, tackling issues like dilapidations, an expired lease etc. In contrast to the first half the second part of the session will focus on ‘what to do if it’s already been done wrong before you got there’ which is the situation many of us find ourselves in! This course will be provided by a solicitor specialising in the law relating to premises, with experience of working with community organisations.

What will I get out of it?

  • An improved understanding of the law relating to premises, and to leases in particular, mainly from the tenant’s perspective and an increased awareness of how to foresee and avert future problems
  • An increased understanding of how to resolve common problems with leases and an increased ability to use your legal advisor more effectively
  • An increased understanding of the terms and conditions that need to be in a lease for an organisation to be eligible for most capital funding

Free for all voluntary and community organisations in Islington.
For other organisations please see our pricing structure.

This course has been funded by Big Lottery Fund
