Managing volunteers for the first time

09/03/2011 @ 09:45 - 15:30

Who is it for?
This is an introductory course for management committee members, staff or volunteers who want to learn more about good volunteer management practice, from the beginning to the end of the process. It is aimed at those who have responsibilities for managing volunteers for the first time, or those who are likely to take on these responsibilities in the near future.

What is it about?
Why are we taking on volunteers and what are their motivations for volunteering? How do I get the right volunteer for the role? What should be covered during an induction period or in an induction pack for new volunteers? How often should a manager meet with a volunteer? What should be discussed at these meetings? These questions will be explored during this interactive learning session. Participants will be provided with templates for induction pack and checklists.

What will I get out of it?

  • The ability to create a volunteer role description for your organisation
  • A draft set of relevant interview questions for volunteers for your organisation
  • The ability to make sure that supervision and induction for volunteers are designed to be a positive experience
  • Vital information about legal aspects of managing volunteers, volunteer agreements, and policies
