Influencing Public Decision Making Training

15/03/2013 @ 09:30 - 13:00

Islington BME Forum and Islington Community Network have teamed up to provide free training sessions to empower you to have a say on public decisions.

Engaging with Parliament

Alasdair Mackenzie of the Houses of Parliament’s outreach service will be advising on how to get the most out of engaging with Parliament. Topics covered will include:

  • contacting your MP and Members of the House of Lords
  • parliamentary questions
  • debates
  • draft Bills
  • how laws are made
  • Select Committees.

Alasdair will also touch on some of the issues currently being tackled in Parliament such as the Children and Families Bill and the draft Care and Support Bill.

The Sustainable Communities Act

Ameneh Enayat of Local Works will discuss the act’s provision of a unique process that enables communities and councils to drive government assistance in their local area. Local Works are a coalition of 100 organisations who campaigned for the legislation to be introduced in 2007 and now exist solely to promote the Act and ensure proper implementation. This session will cover:

  • Background, philosophy, principals behind SCA
  • What SCA is and how it works
  • Exploring and discussing potential ways the SCA can help community groups
  • Considering how to work with and influence local councils so they will use the opportunities of the Act

Local Works offer follow-up support after the session through a dedicated advice line and assistance with writing proposals.
