From July 2011 – May 2012 Islington Council conducted a scrutiny review of their performance in achieving equality outcomes for residents and council staff.

In April 2012, Islington BME Forum partnered with the Islington Community Network, bringing together 27 voluntary sector groups representing BME, LGBT, Gender, Age and Disability groups in Islington, to submit evidence and recommendations to the council’s review. Groups voiced the need for better engagement from the council, for the voluntary sector to be able to apply meaningful scrutiny and voice what the equality priorities are for communities.  Our submitted report can be found here.

Islington Scrutiny Review Committee took on board some of these concerns and endorsed some of our recommendations in their final Equalities Review report to the Council Executive, including the need for an external VCS Equalities Forum to help steer the equality objectives and hold the council to account.  Their final Equalities Review report to the Council Executive can be found here.

The Council Executive has now responded to the recommendations and findings in the review with a strategic document outlining their approach to achieving equality. The document can be found here.

This meeting will be to review the council’s approach on how it will engage with the voluntary and community sector to ensure improvement in equality outcomes for Islington’s residents.  The findings from the focus group will be submitted to the council to ensure on-going meaningful engagement.
