Advice Network Meeting

08/01/2013 @ 14:00 - 17:00

The Islington Advice Network, Islington Advice Alliance and Voluntary Action Islington would like to invite all Advice Network members and other community organisations with an interest in advice services in Islington to a meeting to discuss a bid to the Advice Transition Fund.

The meeting will be at 2 pm on Tuesday 8 January at Voluntary Action Islington 200a Pentonville Road, London N1 9JP.

This is money available via the Big Lottery for advice providers, to help mitigate the cuts in advice funding.

However, the fund is designed to help advice agencies work more effectively together and to identify the most efficient ways to deliver services, and only 25% can be spent on ongoing advice work.

We have had some thoughts, and some discussions with existing networks, and would like to meet with other agencies to help make sure that the best possible bid can go in for Islington.

The ideas so far include:-

  • Developing initiatives to help prevent the need for intensive casework – these will include weekly sessions for Islington residents offering form filling and help in completing income and expenditure sheets, with trained and supervised law student volunteers.
  • Regular, free or very low cost training for community organisations in Islington to help their staff and volunteers be skilled up and equipped to provide front line assistance.  These sessions will be available in different locations and can be tailored to suit demand but could include welfare reform, understanding debt, employment rights, housing for private sector tenants, how to support client groups who have immigration issues etc.
  • Better web based access to information for community organisations, and piloting of on-line referral facilities.
  • Developing new ways of understanding emerging needs and pressures on communities and support for developing innovative solutions that focus on the real needs of service users. We would be keen to look at ways of increasing the amount of pro bono activity in the borough as part of this.

We appreciate that there are many pressures on people’s time and so we will shortly be launching a short online survey so that groups who cannot attend can feed in their priorities and ideas.

The bid needs to be submitted in January, and so the survey will run until January 10 only.
