Action for Local Food: Climate, Community & Food in Islington

April 7 @ 13:00 - 14:30

THE VISION:

Imagine if we decided to grow as much food as possible in Islington. Imagine if the people of Islington worked together to make sure everyone in our community has access to local, fresh, nutritious, and sustainable food.

Action for Local Food is a new movement on a mission to create local solutions that address our climate emergency and benefit the community by growing fruit and veg, building soil, harvesting water, preventing food waste and sharing surplus food. Our big picture vision is everyone in Islington having access to local, fresh, nutritious and sustainable food.

If you are interested in joining the movement for local food, please take one minute to fill out this Google Form so we can learn about your interests and connect you to the right people, activities and opportunities.

Islington doesn’t have much green space, but so many members of our community are finding creative ways of growing food in the city. In doing so, they are helping create more harmony with nature, more social justice, and a more healthy community.

We want to bring people together to grow a movement that will build on the amazing work that is already happening, and create a community that is more just, and more beautiful. Ambassadors of our movement will develop their knowledge and help to share skills with others across the borough.

With the pressures of the pandemic still with us and the threat of the climate emergency growing, it’s more important than ever that we take action for local food. In times of trouble, people across the world have turned to growing their own food. Planting a seed is a sign of hope and resilience in the face of adversity. In the past, our ancestors have responded to difficult times by growing their own food. During the Second World War, Londoners grew as much of their own food as possible to help deal with rationing and food shortages. Today, we face a different set of problems, but we can still respond to them by following in our ancestors’ footsteps, growing locally and not wasting any food.

If we work together, we can grow a strong movement of people and make this goal a reality. If you are interested, we can help you take action and connect you with a movement of people working towards a shared vision.

THE PLAN:

At this event, we’ll explore why local food action will be beneficial on so many levels, and give you a sense of what you can get involved with in Islington.

We’ve started some rough plans, but need the ideas and energy of the community to really make this come alive! If you have any ideas or have been working on something, please get in touch (see our contact details below).

Our local action is centred around five food pillars:

  • Growing food
  • Building soil
  • Harvesting water
  • Preventing food waste
  • Sharing surplus food
